Because women all over the world, in various fields and backgrounds have come a long way striking a balance in development so as to make the world better, we join the world to celebrate the International Women’s Day focusing on three women whom by their participation have proved that “Better the balance, better the world”.

The first on our list is Funke Opeke a Nigerian electrical engineer, founder of Main Street Technologies and Chief Executive Officer of Main .One Cable Company, a communications services company based in Lagos State, Nigeria.

In 2008, after working and serving different capacities of communication companies like SendMail America, MTN Nigeria, Verizons Communications and NITEL, her initiative to finance a 4,400 miles of fibre optic cable from Portugal to South Africa was the big thing that pointed out how the lack of internet can hinder a nation’s progress.

It is interesting to know that Main One is in an agreement with Avanti and also in partnership with Facebook to improve broadband internet within Nigeria. This is a move borne out of discipline, responsibility and consistency characterized by Funke Opeke

Next is Judith Owigar a Kenyan social entrepreneur, visionary techpreneur and co- founder of AkiraChix, an organisation whose vision is to nurture generations of women who use technology to develop innovations and solutions for Africa

Being among one of the few women who found interest in technology while in the university and realizing that women were lagging behind in technology, her passion was driven towards increasing the number of women creating impact using technology.

Judith serves in the Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions (SPIDER) board, the Lumen Labs board, the Africa WeTech (Women Enhancing Technology) Leadership Council and the St. George’s Primary School Alumni Association. In 2012, She was listed among CNN’s African Voices.

Finally is Dr. Tendai Mhizha, a Zimbabwean full time lecturer who is well experienced in leadership, management, branding and market research, having worked for leading companies like Edgars Group, Research Bureau International amongst others.

Tendai has published several articles for magazines and presented conference papers in SA and internationally. She has been awarded the Entrepreneur of the year in Zimbabwe and was a winner of the Plus24 PAMRO African Achievement Award for furthering the aims of research across the African Continent.

Adding to her feathers, was her recent appointment by the Insight Redefini Group as the new Managing Director of its flagship creative powerhouse, Insight Publicis.

Happy International Women’s Day!
